THE NATURE OF SICILY
The idea of VelaNaturaCultura is to organize "holidays" on the island, using the sailboat as a means of travel, with a starting point in Marsala.
We sail, go ashore, and we organize guided tours with specialized local staff to the most significant sites in the area
What we want to give are some indications of what can be visited in the area where we sail.
Some sites can be reached by sea, others by land. In any case, VelaNaturaCultura advises you to make the most of the days available without necessarily limiting them to the classic boat holiday
Sicily offers a vastness of beauties, from East to West and from North to South, which would be an understatement to limit oneself only to the coasts or to the sea alone.
In the chapters of Nature and Culture, we will try to point out the most significant things in the west of the island.
Zingaro Reserve
Just twenty minutes by car separate the Zingaro Nature Reserve from San Vito Lo Capo.
You enter almost on tiptoe in this wild and fascinating place that already reveals all its extraordinary beauty from above.
With its 7 beaches
- Cala Tonnarella dell'Uzzo
- Cala dell'Uzzo
- Cala Marinella
- Cala Berretta
- Cala della Disa
- Cala del Varo
- Cala Capreria
Different Mediterranean ecosystems are represented, partially modified by residues of agricultural activities.
- The original landscape was mostly made up of evergreen Mediterranean forest whose traces are still represented by areas of holm oak, where small ferns, cyclamen, butcher's broom bushes are housed and, at the western limit of the reserve, also by fragments of cork oak , testimony of that cork forest formation now almost completely disappeared in the rest of western Sicily.
- The currently most peculiar aspect of the reserve is however the dwarf palm garrigue, which characterizes large areas of the coastal landscape
- 39 species of birds nest in the reserve including the peregrine falcon, one of the last ten pairs present in Sicily of the Bonelli's eagle, the buzzard and the kestrel. During the migration period, specimens of golden eagles were also sighted
Coastal path
It is the main trail of the reserve, the most traveled by visitors. It runs for about 7 km and connects the main entrance of Scopello (south entrance) to that of San Vito Lo Capo (north entrance). It lasts about 2 hours (one way).
Salt pans of Trapani, Marsala and Paceco
In the Trapani area, the salt pans are widespread and, skirting them around five in the afternoon, you will be able to admire an expanse of elegantly posed flamingos: a spectacle that is nothing short of wonderful. The road that leads from Trapani to Marsala is in fact also known as the Via del Sale, this beautiful road is the gateway to the Stagnone Nature Reserve. Here the territory is rich in salt pans and ancient mills, a wonder to be traveled to discover incredible naturalistic landscapes. Stagnone Reserve
The archipelago of the Stagnone Islands embraces an area of 2,000 ha and extends between Punta San Teodoro and Capo Lilibeo. The Reserve includes the entire lagoon bordered by the open sea by the Grande or Longa island, with three islets in its interior, Mozia (Mothia), Santa Maria and Schola. It is the largest lagoon in Sicily and has an environment of enormous naturalistic interest and of great scenic beauty. The salt pans, still in operation, are conducted using traditional methods.
The ornithofauna and in particular the migratory one are also varied. Finally, the posidonia meadows that surround a large part of the lagoon bottoms are splendid, whose warm and shallow waters constitute the ideal habitat for a very rich fish fauna.
About 3 km north of the historic landing stage, the ancient road connection begins in the Birgi Nivaloro district with the island of Mozia (Mothia), ancient Phoenician colony on the island of San Pantaleo among the most important archaeological sites in the world, connected to the mainland by the so-called "Punic road", which emerges below the water level.
In the coastal area there are several windsurfing, kitesurfing, canoeing and sailing schools, which are a strong attraction for young sports tourism.
Marine nature reserve of the Egadi islands
The Aegadian Islands Protected Marine Area is a protected marine area consisting of 53,992 ha of sea in the territory of the Egadi islands archipelago. With its surface it is the largest marine protected area in Europe
The (flora) in the area includes over 400 species among which the Mediterranean scrub stands out.
The fauna presents a great variety of both sedentary and migratory birds. Among the most present species are the stormbird, the shearwater shearwater, the shearwater greater, the black nun and the Bonelli's eagle.
In 2013 the presence of the monk seal was reported.
the seabed reveals a great variety of valuable habitats.
These places, of exceptional environmental and landscape value, are a source of great tourist attraction. Scuba diving, superficial (but with presences of exceptional value), or deep, in caves, or on underwater archaeological sites (the Egadi Islands were the scene of the famous naval battle between the Romans and the Carthaginians, in an area located north-west of Levanzo) . The battle of the Egadi Islands, fought on 10 March 241 BC, marks the definitive defeat of Carthage and the end of the First Punic War.
San Vito lo Capo
It was born at the end of the eighteenth century, in the state-owned area of Erice, at the foot of Monte Monaco, in the white bay between Capo San Vito and Punta Solanto.
In front of San Vito there is a "beach" of fine white sand that borders the start of the nature trail of the Zingaro reserve
To the west of Capo San Vito there is a jagged coast full of small coves with crystal clear waters that facilitate the entrance to the sea
The Cous Cous Fest was born in 1998, a review of Mediterranean food and wine that has made San Vito Lo Capo the world capital of cous cous, hospitality and multiculturalism.
The event takes place every year starting in the third week of September
Bue Marino beach
Going along the state road from San Vito lo Capo towards Trapani you will find Caletta del Bue Marino, one of the most popular beaches in Italy, able to offer an incredibly scenic landscape, cobalt blue waters, very clear. La Caletta del Bue Marino is a true paradise located in the Macari hamlet of San Vito Lo Capo, where the beauties of nature embellish this environment, from which it is possible to witness a beautiful sunset. In 2016, Caletta del Bue Marino was elected as the most beautiful beach in Italy by a competition organized by Legambiente.
In its surroundings there are frequent sea caves located right on the sea level, allowing, through a swim, to visit real natural monuments created over time through marine erosion
Monte Cofano Nature Reserve
Continuing on the road you reach the entrance to the Monte Cofano Nature Reserve. You can see the agglomeration of the Tonnara di Cofano, right at the foot of the mountain. Among the buildings, the Torre di Tono stands out, unique in Sicily with a square shape with concave walls. Moving forward to the west entrance, the rock faces are rugged and steep. When you pass the Punta del Saraceno, they descend overlooking the sea and create suggestive coves. The more daring and with good boots can decide to reach the west coast following the signs for the Scaletta path.
Also worth seeing is the Mangiapane or Scurati Grotto. It rises near the hamlet of Scurati. Inside there is a small hamlet of houses, inhabited until the middle of the last century. In the cave traces of human presence have been found (flint tools, graffiti) dating back to the upper Paleolithic.
THESE ARE JUST SOME OF THE BEAUTIES OF THIS LAND!
Now is the time to go and discover them live together: set sail with our boats and enjoy a trip tailored for you!
